What is Pay-per-click and how can I make it work for Me?

Pay per click (PPC) is an Internet advertising model used on websites, in which advertisers pay their host only when their ad is clicked. With search engines, advertisers typically bid on keyword phrases relevant to their target market. Content sites commonly charge a fixed price per click rather than use a bidding system.

The Advantage of Pay-per-click
I don’t have a baby. Why would a diaper company ever want to spend money advertising to me? They wouldn’t. However, diaper companies are throwing away ad dollars on me all the time. I see them on TV, I see them in the paper, I see them in the store. This is an intrinsic flaw in the traditional advertising model. You have to blanket everyone with an ad in order to attract the section of that population that will be interested in diapers.
Pay-per-click advertising allows you to only pay for the people who want to hear your message. If they don’t click on your ad, they don’t cost you anything. Additionally, if I’m advertising diapers, my ad won’t even show up on pages that don’t have something to do with diapers, parenting, or incontinent adults. PPC allows you to advertise to specifically the people who are (or will be) interested in your product.

What is Adwords?

Adwords is Google’s pay-per-click advertising system. It distributes ads to Google search results pages as well as Google’s Content Network. Search results pages show ads based on the search term that has been typed in. For example, if you search for, “diaper deals” in Google, ads (or Sponsored Links) for Huggies and other diapers show up on the top and right of the results page (see below).

Google’s Content Network is all the websites that have ads that say, “Ads by Google”. These pages display ads based on the content of the website. If a website has a lot of content about diapers, Google places ads about diapers on the site.
