Meta tags and Search Engine Optimization

What are Meta Tags?
Meta tags provide behind the scenes information about your web pages to your browser and search engines.  They provide language information, keywords, descriptions, and more to help explain each webpage in your site.  Traditionally, this information (especially keywords and descriptions) was used heavily by search engines to determine the content of your webpage.  More recently search engines have become more robust, allowing them to track every word on each webpage, instead of just the information in the meta tags.  Meta tags still play an important role in optimizing your site for search engines.  The information in the description tag is often used in the teaser text of a Google results page.  (see the example below)

<meta name="description" content="The USDA Guaranteed Rural Home loan program allows financing up to 102% of the appraised value on the purchase of a home. This means that the purchase price, and the one time cost of mortgage insurance can be financed into the loan." />
Example of meta description on google search results
The description and keywords are some of the most straight-forward ways to explain to Google what exactly your page is about.  Your page has a much better way of showing up in Google search results if the keywords being searched for in Google match the keywords in your meta keywords and meta description.

How Eclipse Integrates Meta Tags
